I\'m about 50 miles west of DC, and we had a few corps (Magic and Kiwanis Kavaliers) staying at the local High School last summer for a show in the area. Apparently they were treated well, because the band booster club announced today that this little town of 7,000 will host the last major show before Orlando on August 3, 2003. Mick: Since Bill King doesn\'t show an e-mail address, I am sending this note to you. I\'m hoping you are the same Mickey that I rmemeber. I\'m guessing you are about two years older than me. I\'m Rick Sonntag, age 60, and one of the original DAR Boys Club Corps members. At 11 years old when I won a spot, I could hardly lift the old-style baritone. I will never forget the old white paper \"butcher\" caps we wore in that first parade, I think it was Memorial Day!

I hold very dear that the name Northernaires was my entry in our \"name the corps\" contest back in about 1954 or so. And now, 50 years later, here is a reunion!

As I grew bigger, the horns I played got smaller. (My mom didn\'t raise no dummy here!) I progressed from baritone to tenor to evetually playing first soprano. I marched through my 18th birthday and then went to school in Minneapolis in 1960-61. I returned to work full time at WAGN and then went to work at WMAM. During that time, I became the guard instructor through the early 60\'s with a great, enthusiastic John LeBouten being the guard sergeant. We spent a lot of afternoons practicing at the old Circus Grounds on 10th Avenue. Being in radio broadcasting, I also had the honor of MCing many of the local drum corps shows, \"Drums In the North\" and others. I was also a regular contributor to the old Drum Corps World magazine, the predecessor of Drum Corps International.

I have so many memories, including the old Iron Horse bus, the hearse equipment wagon, the many faces, not only of Bill, but Lenny Nordost, Bob \"Hutch\" Hutchinson, Les Pelon, Bob MaCauley, Max Nolechek, Ed Wizner, Steve Harrington, and many others. I remember particularly well our first trip  to the lower Peninsula and putting on an exhibition in Lansing at the State American Legion Convention. The senior Lamplighters were Michigan\'s hot corps...until we took the field. I get tears thinking of that fabulous reception we got at the end of the exhibition. I believe that was the turning point and the real birth of junior drum corps in Michigan.

And I\'d be remiss if I didn\'t mention the one-sided rivalry with the Kilties. The years have taken their toll on where and when, but I do remember us beating them once, and only once, in all our meetings. That...was one hell of a win!

I have never lost my love for Drum Corps! For the past 25 years, my wife and I have managed to see many of the DCI Championships from Madison three or four times, to Kansas City, to Orlando, to wherever! And now, every year we have the top Southwestern Summer Music Games Championship right here at home in San Antonio.

The progress of Drum Corps has been nothing short of sensational. From our old single valve horns and \"Red Sails in the Sunset\", to the amazing rotary valves and \"Battle Hymn\", to the classical and jazz sounds of today, Drum Corps continues to play a part in my life and is the greatest youth activity in the country.

I\'m certainly hoping to be there for the reunion, at least a day or so! However, I have a  business conflict and have to travel on Sunday and won\'t be there for the performance. I have an 8am meeting in Albuquerque on Monday.

Mick, I\'m wondering what type of response you\'ve had from \"old timers\"...I mean really old timers? It would be great to see them. I\'m sure George Krah, Mike Dugan, Fran Nowakowski, Ken Thompson, Forrest Coleman, all from my MHS class, will be there. We relive the old days at each class reunion. But what about others?

Forgive me for meandering, but I recall in one of the mailouts, Chris asked for some memories. You can use any of this and I\'d appreciate you sharing this with Bill. He and I have continued to correspond at Christmas every year since I left Menominee and manage to squeeze in a visit whenever I\'m home!

A special thanks to Dean for all his hard work getting things ready for this past weekend and a big personal thanks to all the Northernaires that performed or had any part in this weekends festivities. I had more fun this weekend than I have in years. The cameraderie with the other corps and the layed back approach we had with the singing and the impromptu jazz session at the concert all added up to a very unique weekend. Not to mention members and friends that we haven\'t seen in a long time showing up at the last minute. It was great. I think the people felt we gave them a fresh look at the Northernaires with some new pieces and the truly have fun attitude. I especially liked the way we exited the concert area and then playing Walk Alone for ourselves as a show of drum corps brotherhood.

My brother Terry was with the corps for many years as a drum major.
